University of Greenwich Decarbonisation – National Award Winner

We are extremely proud that the University of Greenwich has been recognised with the Decarbonisation Project of the Year 2025 by the Energy Managers Association (EMA), for the transformative works delivered at their Avery Hill campus. Bower Fuller played a significant role in the design and build of the mechanical and electrical systems, collaborating closely with main contractor Mulalley from RIBA Stage 1. The scheme centred on replacing the ageing 30-year-old gas fired district heating network with a resilient, future-proofed heat infrastructure. Key elements included a central ambient loop, air source and water-to-water heat pumps, newly buried district pipework, and adaptable flow strategies that will enable the University to progressively lower operating temperatures as further building upgrades take place in the future. The works allowed five of the existing buildings on site to be successfully migrated onto the ambient loop system. The project was carried out while the University remained operational, requiring careful planning and coordination works to ensure continuity of campus activities.
