West Suffolk Hospital, Chiller Replacement
This was a fast-track project for West Suffolk Hospital to remove an existing 28-year-old absorption chiller and replace it with two more efficient electric chillers. The chilled water system provides chilled water to a number of critical areas in the hospital including main operating theatres and the high dependency unit.
Part of the project involved bringing temporary chillers in to support the existing services and reduce any shut down periods. A key challenge of the scheme revolved around the logistics of operating in a confined location within a busy town centre hospital. Due to the location of the chiller being so central and surrounded on all sides by other occupied buildings, a 450-tonne crane with a long reach was necessary to remove the existing equipment from the roof. Our scope also included the installation of a new chilled water header, BMS controls, new power supplies and alterations to the existing external steelwork bases.
We took on the role of Principal Contractor for the project and closely liaised with the estates team and end users to ensure all elements were planned efficiently and in a timely manner over the 7-week programme.
