Engineering Services for Buildings
University of Suffolk, East Building
Working alongside main contractor Barnes Construction, Bower Fuller was appointed to carry out the full mechanical and electrical installation to a new four-storey college health and wellbeing centre. The scheme provides clinical simulation facilities and features state-of-the-art hospital wards, a midwifery birthing unit, a psychology lab, sports and exercise spaces, a radiography imaging suite, counselling and physiotherapy clinic rooms, alongside a hub for the Suffolk Institute of Health and Wellbeing Research.

All areas benefit from a VRF system which provides heating and cooling to the building, fed from a remote condenser farm. Two roof mounted mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems serve the building with fresh air intake and exhaust drawn through external terminals and supplemented with natural ventilation units to various areas.  Domestic water and drainage services have also been installed throughout.

The electrical services comprise high efficiency LED lighting arrangements, fitted with a smart control system to improve energy efficiency and enable daylight dimming when natural light levels are sufficient. New small power services include fire alarm access control, disabled refuge and security systems.

In addition, the size and extent of the new facilities required four dedicated server rooms to be created at each level in the building to enable a high-speed data network for the users, while the campus’s privately owned HV substation was upgraded to increase capacity and accommodate future expansion.
