Engineering Services for Buildings

University Of Essex, Psychology Research Building

Secured under competitive tender, Bower Fuller installed the electrical services to the development; which included lighting, emergency lighting, Cat 6 data and fire alarm systems.

The building contains 5 laboratories and associated research offices on two levels, with plant areas on a lower third level. Located next to the existing Psychology building, they are linked across two storeys via enclosed ‘bridges’.

The research laboratories have low voltage lighting systems and room power supply isolation, so that electrical currents from these services do not interfere with sensitive brainwave experiments.

Emergency lighting is supplied by a central battery system, and there is an auto changeover facility installed on the lift supply. Presence detection is also included on the lighting installation in some areas.

Dual metering has been fitted to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations, and BMS metering has been fitted to the incoming electrical supply, to enable the University to monitor usage.
