Pakefield School Phase I, Lowestoft
This striking new school building will provide space for 900 pupils once it reaches its full capacity. Built within the grounds of the existing school the project is the first phase of the planned development. Working with the main contractor, Barnes, Bower Fuller provided the installation of mechanical and electrical services.
Mechanically, the school building features a “Full Life Safe” sprinkler system. A biomass boiler is the source of heating an underfloor heating system, ceiling mounted radiant panels and radiators. Ventilation is via a passive ventilation system employing roof mounted vents which features a traffic light system to indicate levels of CO² and temperature within the occupied space.
The project included the establishment of a remote energy centre which houses the bio-mass boilers and fuel delivery systems, the HV / LV transformer, the sprinkler tank and associated pumps.
Electrically, Bower Fuller provided both the HV and LV distribution systems, a complex lighting arrangement and a self-test emergency lighting system, a fire alarm system (featuring provision for DeafWatch for the hard of hearing), and an intruder and biometric access control system.
Bower Fuller has also installed systems to aid advance teaching techniques employed by the school. Infra-red induction loops allowing flexible use of speakers and microphones have been installed. Additionally, a comprehensive ClassWatch arrangement has been included within the classrooms to allow the teachers to review and assess their teaching practices.
