Built in 1974, West Suffolk Hospital is a vibrant, friendly and accessible district general hospital set in a nineteen-hectare parkland site on the edge of Bury St Edmunds. It has around 430 beds and serves a population of around 275,000. It achieved Foundation Trust status in December 2011. A popular place for trainees, the hospital operates a 24-hour accident and emergency department as well as a wide range of specialist hospital services, including a Day Surgery Unit.

We worked with Barnes Construction, JS&H MEP consultants and KLH Architects on the £12m new build scheme to provide 160 en-suite bedrooms across the three 5-storey buildings with communal kitchen and living areas, including accessible facilities.

The three buildings are sited at the rear of the Hardwick Lane site in Bury St Edmunds. The new accommodation hopes to attract new joiners to the Trust and will ensure that the clinicians who live on site have a good experience and comfortable home to return to after their shifts. Part of the West Suffolk Hospital requirements is that all areas are a great functional space and that every build on site has eco-friendly credentials. These blocks have been created with solar panels, dual-flush toilets, LED lighting double glazing and high levels of insulation, thus ensuring that the development is an efficient addition to the existing facilities at the hospital.

The scheme is configured around a block of four en-suite bedroom flats, with each dwelling served by a domestic wall hung boiler, feeding radiators and a traditional cylinder for hot water. However, located behind the 40 flats is a commercial MEP installation providing boosted cold water, gas services, power and data, picking up the infrastructure from various locations on the West Suffolk Hospital site.
