Ipswich Hospital, AMSDEC

The Acute Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit (AMSDEC) is able to assess and treat patients quickly and efficiently who are suffering with issues such as chest infections or palpitations and without the need for a hospital stay. The new development at Ipswich Hospital created a first floor new build extension and roof plant room on to the existing AMSDEC single storey building together with a refurbishment of various ground floor spaces.

The project was programmed on an exceptionally fast track basis. This necessitated the site team working in shifts 7 days a week over a period of 4 months. Procurement was a particularly challenging feature as materials and equipment had to be sourced at short notice and during a period when demand for medical components was outstripping availability at the outset of the pandemic.  However through a series of workshops with the design team and our own supply chain, we were able to provide technical solutions that met the performance, quality and delivery parameters.

There was also a significant focus on coordination with the design team and other trades due to the spatial limitations within the voids and ceilings. Several services were connected to the existing central systems, hence close liaison with the hospital Estates team was equally essential to ensure no delays to the programme or interruptions to existing services.

The works included specialist nurse call and medical gas systems along with general heating, ventilation, domestic services, power, lighting, data and fire alarm.
