Engineering Services for Buildings

Clare College, Masters Lodge

The Masters Lodge is a Grade 1 listed building. The need to improve the heating system led to the replacement of the existing heating with new controls, upgraded windows for thermal performance, and bathroom upgrades.

In view of restricted access, storage and delivery restraints, careful coordination and planning was essential.

The heating installation included the removal of some 24no cast iron radiators for refurbishment. The removal of existing pipework and pumps led to the installation of a new thermal interface unit, with new stainless steel pipework and press fit fittings.

The radiator removal was of great importance as these were taken off site refurbished and returned to site within a short time period to comply with the overall fast track programme to completion.

The only available space to house the new heating interface unit, pressure set with expansion vessel and new controls was an existing cupboard within the basement area. This necessitated a high degree of co-ordination to ensure the equipment all neatly fitted within the spatial confines.

A Heatmiser touch screen control system was chosen to permit unobtrusive wiring and stats on the walls (some with remote sensors).

The upgraded services means the lodge can now be controlled in three zones to suit occupancy and functions, and can be treated as a stand-alone installation.
