BT Cable Farm

Working directly for BT on their programme for testing the next generation of transmission cables, our brief as Principle Contractor was to create a cable farm external to one of the existing BT test laboratories at their research and development site in Martlesham, Suffolk. The design and build project allows multiple layers of new transmission cable to be laid side by side and on top to test how much information can be passed down each cable.

Sited on a new concrete base, the 20metre long unistrut and cable basket structure provides 9 levels of cable runs over the four metre height frame. The structure has been installed with lightning protection and pest control netting.

If the tests prove successful for BT, then all homes within the UK could have a new type of data in the future which is capable of transmitting cable installed within the roads system and telephone lines will be via IP addresses. The telephone exchanges as we know them today could be a thing of the past tomorrow!
