Astex Therapeutics, New Microscope Room

We recently completed a project for Astex Therapeutics on the Cambridge Science Park, transforming an existing administration space into a specialist microscope room. The work required a comprehensive mechanical and electrical design to meet the exacting environmental parameters demanded by the unique equipment. Acting in the dual role of Principal Designer and Contractor, we managed the project from concept through to Stage 3 design, providing an extensive range of options through the Assessment Study. This included recommendations on how best to proceed within the spatial constraints of the plant areas while minimising any detrimental impact on the existing systems. Subsequently, we developed Stage 4 information, ensuring that both close control temperatures and humidity could be achieved alongside fully integrated safety systems, electrical services and medical gas installations. Working closely with our network of manufacturers and specialist contractors we were able to produce a coordinated package that allowed the project to be costed and progressed.

It was essential that our work was completed in advance of the microscope being delivered. Our team implemented a Construction Phase Plan and a fully coordinated programme to ensure the strict deadline was met, achieving handover ahead of schedule and to the requisite quality standards.   

Our workscope included :

  • A new close control unit with associated ventilation, heating and chilled water arrangements
  • Medical gas supplies, gas monitoring and emergency extract installations  
  • BMS adaptions, noise/vibration and electromagnetic shielding to wall penetrations
  • Fibreoptic data connections, power supplies and lighting system
  • Raising the ceiling height to facilitate maintenance access
  • Decorations and final finishes
  • Comprehensive commissioning of all systems
