Astex Lab FL04, Cambridge Science Park
We were pleased to return to Astex Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge with SDC Builders for our third major scheme on the site. This design development project involved us validating, making safe and stripping out the redundant mechanical and electrical services to an existing laboratory. We then completely refurbished the facility with new fume cupboards, local exhaust ventilation and overhead service wings to assist the scientists with their ongoing research. As part of the work, we undertook alterations to the existing mechanical systems to suit the new layouts and provided an entirely new electrical installation, along with several specialist packages such as laboratory gases. Working in an operational building can often present challenges, however these were overcome with all parties talking through any issues in advance and careful forward planning of shutdowns and deliveries.
The new mechanical installation comprised changes to the existing fume extract and supply air systems, modification of existing laboratory gases pipework, process chilled water, drainage, BMS, domestic water, RO water, a new gas detection system, a new vacuum pump, vacuum lines and the Waldner service wings. We also carried out modifications to the electrical containment, wiring accessories, lighting control, fire alarm, and panic alarm. A structured cabling data system was installed back to the comms room together with replacement emergency lighting batteries and a new roof plant room located distribution board. The overhead bespoke Waldner wings provide a service gantry to allow access to the plug-in services for the users, including various power outlets, data, gases and built in LED lighting.
