Addenbrookes Hospital, Wards G2/F2
The project entailed a major refurbishment of the existing G2 ward and various rooms in F2 ward including central risers. Various new spaces have been created such as offices, toilets, satellite kitchen, drugs prep, circulation and nurse areas, a 13-bed ward facility, treatment room, staff room, dirty utility rooms, and an external courtyard housing a new air handling unit and condensers.
The mechanical package required significant modifications to existing services together with new installations for domestic water, LTHW, above ground drainage, ventilation, air conditioning, BMS, medical gases and combined fire smoke dampers with associated controls.
The electrical package consisted of sub mains cabling, power distribution, fire rated cable management spines, cabling and earthing. Our scope also encompassed main and sub distribution boards, metering, internal and emergency lighting and associated controls, data cabling, fire alarm systems/ASD system, nurse call, door access, patient TV and static flat wall droppers.
The project presented unique challenges as there were several runs of existing services feeding areas outside of the G2/FG2 boundaries. In addition, extensive modifications were necessary to the level below G2/G2 wards to enable the M+E infrastructure.
Close coordination and careful planning was essential with the Trust and other stakeholders to keep services live and manage the severe spatial constraints and congestion within the ceilings where the majority of new service routes were located. The installations revolved around multiple phases and working within occupied ward/treatment areas whilst minimising any interruptions to the hospital’s daily activities.
Throughout the project there was a particular focus on ensuring the fire integrity was maintained. Regular workshops with the Trust’s fire experts were held on site to review M&E fire strategies, requirements and deliverables including cause and effect reviews and formulation.
