Engineering Services for Buildings

Addenbrookes Hospital, Surgical Skills – The Quorum Building, Cambridge

Working alongside main contractor Barnes Construction we carried out a comprehensive mechanical and electrical refurbishment and redevelopment to transform an existing office space into a self-contained medical training facility for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

The existing internal services were removed to make way for a specialist layout consisting of a dissection and operating suite, body storage freezers, and staff and training rooms.

All works were carried out in line with HTM guidelines. The ventilation strategy comprised local MVHR air handling units, and a dedicated dissection extract system. Thermal comfort throughout the building is maintained by a VRF arrangement.

The electrical scope features high efficiency LED luminaires with integrated smart controls to optimise energy efficiency and daylight dimming when natural lighting levels are sufficient. Within the surgical areas, an IPS power system was fitted to accurately simulate a clinical environment. In addition, new general small power provisions were installed across the building along with fire alarm, disabled refuge, door access and security systems, all linked back to the main Addenbrooke’s Hospital for central monitoring.

Given the presence of body storage, a new dedicated generator and auto changeover panel has been provided to ensure uninterrupted power to essential power and lighting circuits.

A high end AV and video package was also incorporated, allowing medical staff to connect remotely and oversee training procedures
