Charity of the Year – AMEND Fundraising

Quiz Night

Bower Fuller was one of twenty teams competing at the hotly contested quiz night held in central Ipswich on a recent wet Friday evening. Some of the finest brains from the construction industry in Suffolk assembled to demonstrate their knowledge of everything and nothing. Contractors, consultants, sub-contractors, suppliers and friends all took part with a view to raising money for AMEND. Whilst the Bower Fuller team certainly didn’t disgrace itself thanks to a fine top five finish, there were one or two members of our team who seemed more interested in the food and drink on offer than answering the quiz questions when it mattered. How good could we have been if we had all been able to properly contribute?  Seriously though, the night was a great success and much fun to attend. Architects, Barefoot and Gilles won the quiz on the night and over £1,100 was raised for the charity.

Football Tournament

Bower Fuller was one of ten teams participating at a recent 7 side football tournament and family fun day. Teams from across the local construction community were in attendance. The format for the day comprised two leagues of four with the winners of each league making it through to a play-off final for the silverware and bragging rights!

Bower Fuller has a bit of history of performing in seven a side tournaments in the past, so our golden generation entered the competition full of hope and expectation. The weather was not particularly kind on the day with grey clouds and rain falling from dawn to dusk. Being from the resilient world of mechanical and electrical contracting, we could not let the weather dampen our spirits. We certainly looked the part in our slim fitting shiny blue kit – almost a throwback to the Scottish national team of the late 70’s when the likes of Dalglish, Law, and Gemmell helped Scotland to be a force in world football (aye right!).

Triumphant in the first game with a comfortable 1-0 over consultants MLM created the perfect start. In the next game our confidence obviously grew as we eased in front of consultants Concertus 4 -1 by half time. And then disaster struck – somehow we demoralizingly snatched a loss from the jaws of victory by going down 4-5 at full time. Never able to fully recover from the pain of the Concertus match, we proceeded to lose our remaining two league games by a single goal. Too many creative forwards, not enough natural defenders! This consigned us to 4th place overall and an early exit from the competition (again, a bit like the Scotland team of the 70’s – a long forgotten era when they used to at least qualify for major tournaments, but did nothing when they got there). With our interest in the competition having come to a premature end, the Bower Fuller team could relax, let go, and concentrate on enjoying the bbq hospitality that was on offer throughout the day. We could also take a degree of comfort that Concertus went on to compete in the final, and be very pleased that the day raised almost £2,000 for AMEND.
