We are excited to be working with SDC on the new Histopathology laboratories for Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. The fourth floor fit out of the new build B1 class laboratory and office follows the completion of the shell and core by SDC in late 2023, as part of phase 2 of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The fourth floor will feature office/write up areas, meeting rooms, and extensive laboratory space, incorporating around 30 fume cupboards and down draught benches. Dedicated plant spaces are being incorporated for the user’s own services such as fresh air plant to offset the increased extraction rate from the extract systems serving the fume cupboards and benches. We are connecting to the base build services of the shell and core for general ventilation, heating, cooling, power, and other specialist packages. The 2200m2 floor plate will provide the CUH team a purpose-built facility with the flexibility to expand further in the future. Notably, the design of the scheme also benefits from the world’s first pumped formalin system for a facility of this nature. This feature will assist with productivity by eliminating the need for users to fetch and carry five litre vessels of formalin to and from their workstations.
Histopathology plays a crucial role in providing a comprehensive range of histological and cytological pathological services, including routine and specialised examination of tissue samples (immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy), diagnostic screening of body fluids and aspirates, and coroner’s autopsies.
