The James Dyson Centre, University of Cambridge

 


The James Dyson Centre project comprised a complete refurbishment and reconfiguration of various areas within the existing Inglis and Baker buildings at the University of Cambridge for the Department of Engineering.

The 18-week fast track scheme ran concurrently with the new build four storey James Dyson Building that we also delivered, both with Main Contractor, Morgan Sindall.

On the first floor of the Inglis building, the existing workshops and adjacent offices were refurbished to create a new open plan workshop area to provide engineering student the facilities for prototyping and making, using both traditional hand and machine tools and also computer controlled machinery and 3D printers. In the Baker Building, the existing library and adjacent spaces were renovated to provide a modernised library space and new seminar room. Adjacent to the library area, the existing lecture theatre was refurbished and a new link structure was formed between the Dyson Centre in the Inglis Building and the Library in the Baker Building.

The construction team worked very closely with the client enabling their operation to continue in the adjoining buildings with the minimum of disruption and whilst ensuring full focus and progress was equally maintained on the four storey new build of the James Dyson Building.
