Royal Opera House Costume Store

This is a new build costume store completed by our Southern office for the Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet. Working in partnership main contractor, Interserve, the building is located in Purfleet, Essex within the High House Production Park and has attained an “Excellent” BREEAM rating.

As well as the storage of costumes for the Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet, there are workrooms specifically for students with opportunities for training. The Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet maintain a unique and impressive collection of costumes, including some productions dating back over 40 years. In addition, there is a historical collection dating back to the 19th century of more than 6,000 items, which need to be kept in carefully controlled environmental conditions to ensure they are properly conserved. The costume store adds another dimension to the High House Production Park in Purfleet where sets and scenery are also made for Covent Garden productions.

Our scope consisted of all the mechanical and electrical installation works including natural ventilation, close control ventilation, underfloor heating, domestic and drainage system. The electrical systems comprised general lighting small power, fire alarms and access control.

The unique design of the building which included fully exposed CLT timber and self-finish boarding meant that the installation had to be co-ordinated and installed to exacting standards as all the services were exposed to view to enhance the architectural aspects of the project.
