Engineering Services for Buildings

Department of Genetics, Cambridge

The Department of Genetics is located on the University’s ‘Downing’ site in Cambridge, where they undertake long term research into the science of genetics.

The scope of works encompassed the refurbishment of existing laboratories and offices within the building, including the provision of ‘Constant Temperature’ rooms, which enable close control of the environmental conditions.

There are 4 ‘Consultant Temperature’ rooms, each with its own air circulation system providing the close control.

As the rooms are used for housing thousands of insects used for genetic research, the filter requirements needed careful attention to ensure waste was adequately managed.

A particular challenge of this project was to keep all the services operational allowing all the long term experimental and research projects to be undisturbed. This was achieved by working closely with the university staff and phasing the works to suit their requirements.
