Addenbrookes Hospital, Teenage Cancer Trust Ward

Bower Fuller worked with Vinci and WSP to provide the mechanical and electrical services installation on this extensive ward refurbishment.

The Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at Addenbrookes aims to be as close as possible to a young person’s life outside hospital. The private rooms will include vibrant wall designs and state-of-the-art technology allowing young people to keep in touch with their friends. The facilities include a kitchen area, recreational space, chill out room and family room, as well as a social area for day case treatment.

The ward location required that careful consideration was given to patients and staff in order to minimise the disruption caused by noise, dust and access routes up to the ninth floor.

Mechanically a new hot and cold water system, a medical gas distribution system, air conditioning and a ventilation system was installed. The AHU was delivered in kit form to be assembled on site due to space constrictions in the ninth floor plantroom.

Electrically the project involved running a new LV power supply from the ground floor, through the occupied building, to the ninth floor. Within the ward area a fire alarm system, nurse call system, access control, the power distribution system and lighting was installed. To enable wireless technology to be provided to the ward, an audio visual system and a data/Wi-Fi system was installed. A light wall and mood setting LED lighting fitted contribute to the bright and fresh atmosphere within the new ward.
